comfortable option for orthodontic treatment that have gained immense popularity over the years. With the increase of adult orthodontic patients, aesthetic and comfortable alternatives to conventional fixed braces have been gaining traction. Because of the incorporation of digital technology in dentistry, more complex cases are able to be treated using this method. Furthermore, it provides a comfortable treatment experience, facilitates better oral hygiene, and causes less pain as compared to fixed orthodontic appliances. However, its dependency on patient compliance highly affects the result of the treatment. Nonetheless, it is a great option for patients who are seeking orthodontic treatment without the potential discomfort of conventional treatment methods.
A 33-year old male patient came in seeking treatment for teeth alignment. Patient presented with crowding of maxillary and mandibular incisors. Recommended treatment was first rehabilitation (composite restorations of teeth with caries) followed by orthodontic treatment (clear aligners) to correct alignment. A digital intraoral scan was performed after oral rehabilitation as an alternative to the conventional rubber impressions to obtain a mold of the patient’s maxillary and mandibular arch. A digital mock-up of the series of teeth’s movement were then presented to the patient showing the predictability of the result of clear aligner orthodontic treatment. A total of 12 pairs of aligners were used to complete the treatment over the course of 19 months in conjunction with excellent patient compliance. Upper and lower retainers were delivered for maintenance of treatment and recommended to be worn with a minimum of 12 hours a day. The patient reported no post-operative symptoms or discomfort after the orthodontic treatment.
